02-George Rousse
George Rousse is a photographer that manipulate the inside of the architecture by changing the space, and by painting and writing on the wall and floor to create an illusion, and make people questioning about how he did these.
He tricked people's eyes by combine flat shapes with 3d architecture. The shapes he shew on the photo could be flat which is made by painting on the wall, or the shapes we see on the photo could be actually 3d which is made by manipulate the inside of the building. I felt that his works have some similarities with the works of Malevich because in Malevich's work, he made the painting somehow 3 dimensional by making shapes with different color with different transparencies. Malevich's work make 2d shapes looks 3 dimensional but Rousse kind of making 3d things looks like 2 d shapes. It is really interesting to see different artists trick people's eyes with similar to different techniques.
The second movie of George Rousse is about his work in miyagi. The video recorded the process of he and his team working in miyagi to do the project. It is magical to see that how the space is manipulated, and how people can only see the certain scene at certain point.
01-Cindy Sherman: Nobody's Here But Me
Cindy Sherman is a New York based photographer born in 1950s. She is famous for her photography of women as a photographer and a model. She sees the camera as a tool that offer the photographer a chance to show the audiences what he or she wants to show to the audiences, and through photograph, the photographer can make people believe anything. She did most of her work inside her studio, and by changing the arrangement of furniture, she produced different scenes in the photographs. She did her makeup and dressing ups by herself, and she claimed that she only makes scenarios, and make up stories for characters and she does not do too much installation.
In the movie, Sherman talked about that when she arrived in New York, she was shocked about how she was treated when she is walking on the street. She talked about her intimacy of being a women when she is walking on the street, and how she had a street persona, and how she restrained herself in her apartment, and not meeting with other people.
She says that she enjoyed dressing up since she was a child. Also, she did not dress like a typical role model, instead, she wore the clothes of her grandmother which could make her looks like an "old monster". Also, she talked about how a role model women made her frustrated about women role.
Moreover, she talks about her interest in horror movies, and how women worked as protagonists, and potential victims in the movies.
These elements all contributed to her topic of her photographs: the portrait of women that shows women roles, and the portrait of women shows the problems women are facing to.
Sherman photographs does not labeled as feminism or anything else, instead, it show the situation to the audience, and give the audiences opportunities to think about it. Some of the situation she shows still exists, and people are still suffer about their roles.
I do not really understand why this film is called "Nobody's here but me", but I guess it is might be related to the time she just stays at home, or the time that some people would not understand her photography and can not look at them, or it is just related to the content of her photography, the portrait of herself being all other characters.
